Have you always wanted to write but you’re not sure where to start? Would you like to create your own characters and plots and write the opening to a novel?

Come and enjoy a day of creative writing with Emma and Helen. During the day Emma and Helen will teach you how to:
  • Establish and present characters and setting
  • Use a variety of sentence types for impact on the reader
  • Find inspiration for your writing through writing exercises, images and classical music
  • Write an effective opening to your novel.
You will also learn the secrets of successful writing by analysing the work of published authors.

There will be writing exercises throughout the day and in the last session you will have the time to start writing your novel using the techniques you have learnt.

You will go home with a goodie bag containing work from the day and more writing tasks to inspire you and develop your skills.
The day will be informal and supportive and an opportunity for you to meet like-minded people.

Emma and Helen met while teaching English at an independent school in Cumbria. Both degree qualified teachers, they have 44 years’ experience between them teaching creative writing skills to children, young people and adults. They are passionate about bringing out their students' creativity and enabling them to find their voice and writing style.

The class is suitable for those new to creative writing as well as people with some experience who are looking to develop their skills. It will take place in the Blue Room at Rheged, a large, calm, contemporary space that allows for creative thinking. There is unlimited tea and coffee available and you will be able to help yourself throughout the day. There will also be scheduled coffee breaks to allow conversation with your fellow writers and tutors or time to continue writing.

A deli-style lunch is included in the price and will brought to the room. It will include a selection of sandwiches (vegan and vegetarian options provided), crisps, cakes and fresh fruit.
