Language is powerful and, in this class, Emma will help you understand what ‘language’ means. She will teach you how to use vocabulary, imagery, tone and sentence structure, including punctuation in your writing, to create impact on your reader.

There will be plenty of time for practice, with writing exercises throughout the afternoon. You can then use these ideas in your own work.

Emma is a teacher with 26 years’ experience and is passionate about helping people develop their creativity, through creative discussion and writing.

The afternoon will be informal and supportive and an opportunity for you to meet like-minded people.

Previous students on Emma’s courses at Rheged have commented:

‘Fantastic course. My first foray into creative writing for many, many years. Emma’s knowledge and experience was excellent. She made us all feel extremely welcome and we came away feeling inspired and raring to go!” Bea

‘Teaching interspersed with writing activities – great!” Ian

“I enjoyed the friendliness of the course and the chance to talk and share ideas. Lots of time and chance to have a go.” Penny

Who would enjoy this course? The class is suitable for those new to creative writing as well as people with some experience who are looking to develop their skills. It will take place in the Blue Room at Rheged, a calm, contemporary space that allows for creative thinking.

There are unlimited complementary teas, coffee, water and biscuits available, and you will be able to help yourself throughout the afternoon.

There will also be a 10-15 minute break.

You are welcome to write on a device such as a laptop or a notepad/paper and your favourite pen or pencil.
