This class is open to everyone - people new to short story writing or those who have been on Emma’s ‘Short Story Writing’ course. You do not need to have been on that course to come to this one.

The highly regarded short story writer, Anton Chekhov, described the short story as ‘a slice of life’ while F. Scott Fitzgerald talked about a short story needing ‘a key emotion’ at its heart.

In this friendly, informal class, Emma will help to develop your ideas about what makes an engaging short story.

You will consider the all-important opening sentence and practise ways of writing it. You will also learn about how to include sensory details to move your plot and characters forward.

Emma will also teach you other ways of developing your plot and characters, from the starting point of something familiar, then moving into something less ordinary at the rising action stage of the story, while keeping your reader engaged.

There will be plenty of time for putting these ideas and techniques into practice, with writing exercises throughout the morning. This could lead to you writing a complete short story, or making a start and finishing it in your own time - it is totally up to you.

Emma is a teacher with 26 years’ experience and is passionate about helping people develop their creativity, through creative discussion and writing.

The morning will be informal and supportive and an opportunity for you to meet like-minded people.

Previous students in Emma’s ‘Short Story Writing’ creative writing class at Rheged commented:

“Really encouraging, good balance of teaching/discussion.” Claire

“Emma encouraged people to talk and share; easy to understand and gave examples.” Heather

“Relaxed and no pressure to perform.” Derek

“We were guided through very well; good pace.” Fleur

Who would enjoy this course? The class is suitable for those new to creative writing as well as people with some experience who are looking to develop their skills. You do not need to have been on Emma’s ‘Short Story Writing’ course to come to this one.

It will take place in the Blue Room at Rheged, a calm, contemporary space that allows for creative thinking.

There are unlimited complementary teas, coffee, water and biscuits available, and you will be able to help yourself throughout the morning.

There will also be a 10-15 minute break.

You are welcome to write on a device such as a laptop or a notepad/paper and your favourite pen or pencil.
