Using a still life for inspiration, you will be guided through some traditional oil painting techniques, from underpainting, blocking in and blending. Good use of materials, palette control, colour mixing and the use of oil painting mediums will all be covered.

Catherine MacDiarmid has exhibited widely including in the BP Portrait Award and was a finalist in the Sky Portrait Artists of the Year 2019. Catherine has 26 years’ experience teaching art courses.

Please bring with you:
* Set of basic oil colours which must include Titanium, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow or Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt or Raw Umber, Yellow Ochre and Cadmium Red.
*Two glass jars with lids for storing solvents.
*Turps, White spirit or odour free solvent to clean brushes.
*Solvent (pure turps, Zest it or low odour alternative, Linseed Oil or other oil medium to dilute your paint with.
*Some painting brushes of varying size (they do not have to all be hog-hair brushes and a variety is good). Include one large soft one for blending technique.
*Material cotton rags.
*3 x sheets of primed paper of reasonable size (A3/A2). Other surfaces for painting on could be included but not necessary. Anything is okay for oil painting as long as it is well primed with a GESSO primer.
*Something to use as a palette to mix colours on – disposable palette are good.
*Palette knife.
*Overalls or old clothes.
We have a Design shop at Rheged in case you are missing any materials.
