10.30am – Home Grown Here: Life on the Veg!

Join Lynn Barnes from Vista Veg,  a worker-owned co-operative of farmers and growers who produce an impressive variety of veg & fruit in the unlikely climate and terrain of Cumbria.  Over the past five years we’ve been helping to build a more sustainable food system for Cumbria.  Hear what we’ve been doing and why.

11.30am – Dave Felton: ‘Cumbria 1,000 Years of Maps’

The name Camri first appears on maps in AD 1050. Since then the Lake District and historic counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire have been mapped countless times. In this illustrated talk, David Felton, publisher of Cumbria – 1,000 Years of Maps by William Shannon, discusses the most important charts, surveys and maps from ten centuries of Cumbrian cartography.
Dave Felton is an author, publisher, photographer and broadcaster who runs the Cumbrian business Inspired by Lakeland, publishers of, among other titles, Forty Farms, Cumbria – 1,000 Years of Maps, The Lake District in 101 Maps & Infographics and the Lake District Sticker Book. He is producer of the Countrystride podcast – the largest regional podcast in the UK .

12.30 – Cheese and Wine Pairing with The Ethical Dairy and Northern Wine

Join David, Harry & Stacey in this carefully selected cheese and wine pairing.

David Finley from The Ethical Dairy will share his story of how a family farm took on huge risks and financial and emotional challenges to turn away from the damaging effects of industrial dairy farming to one that, ultimately, delivered substantial benefits for nature, climate change, soil health, cow and calf welfare, work satisfaction, food security and even profitability!

Harry and Stacey from Northern Wine will reveal how they set up their winery back in Kendal and how they work closely with amazing grape growers round the UK, get stuck in with the harvesting and bring them back North. Their aim is to make small batch, clean and focused wines that are still fun and approachable with a focus on quality.

1.30pm – Deer, Woods and what’s on our Plates

What do soaring deer numbers mean for our countryside and how can we respond?  Join Jo Sheehan from nature recovery programme, Cumbria Connect, to explore the link between thriving wildlife, restored woodlands and access to healthy sustainable venison.
