Celebrate the rich colours and atmosphere of autumn in this inspiring one-day watercolour workshop with Ruth Clayton.

In this relaxed session, Ruth will guide you step-by-step through a range of watercolour techniques as you recreate this autumn tree painting. You’ll master loose washes and use warm seasonal tones to bring depth, light and movement to your work.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced artist looking to refresh and develop your skills, this workshop offers the perfect opportunity to explore watercolour in a supportive, encouraging environment. Ruth shares simple, effective techniques that make the process enjoyable and accessible for everyone.

At the end of the day, your finished artwork will be professionally framed (£7 on the day), ready for you to take home and proudly display, a beautiful reminder of a creative day immersed in the colours of autumn.

During this workshop, you will design, cut and print five reduction lino prints in two colours, plus white. The class is ideal for those who have some experience in single cut lino printing and wish to develop their skills further. It is also suitable for beginners.
The workshop will cover:

• Introduction to the process of reduction lino printing and points to consider when creating a two colour design.
• Transferring the design onto a printing block
• Preparing the block and paper for accurate registration using the Ternes Burton registration method
• Cutting the design into the block, giving thought to how the separate layers of colour will print; and
• Printing two layers of colour with professional water-based relief printing inks using a printing press.
• Learn how to print without a press too.

Participants will be sent notes prior to the workshop to consider and prepare a design beforehand.

Cumbrian based artist Liz Jones is a printmaker, textile designer and experienced tutor. Liz is one of the four core makers who established nest. based in Rheged and has also been an exhibitor in the annual Great Print show in Rheged's Gallery. Liz works mainly in linocut to create original block printed fabric designs, which she screen prints onto linen and cotton.

All materials including soft cut lino, tools and printing ink will be provided for you.

Jigsaw Lino printing is a great way of producing a multicoloured print using one block and one layer of ink. I will help participants to plan a suitable design and help them transfer it onto a lino block. The designs will be carved and then we will cut the block into separate jigsaw pieces to be inked and printed in different colours.

Workshop notes will be shared before the workshop to enable participants to give thought to a design.

All materials needed for the day will be provided but please bring an apron.

Create an original botanical lino print in full colour, aided every step of the way by artist Laura Sowerby. Using professional quality materials and plenty of elbow grease, you will turn your seed of an idea into a print to be proud of. All you need to bring is an apron.

Laura Sowerby creates intricate botanical prints and handmade wallpaper in linocut at her picturesque studio in the Langdale Fells. Her work has been featured in Country Living, Gardens Illustrated, Country Homes & Interiors and The English Home magazines and shown in galleries both locally and nationally – including at Rheged’s own Great Print Exhibition. Laura is author of ‘Botanical Prints in Linocut’ published 2025.

Rag Rugging is a traditional craft, in this case creating beautiful rugs out of pure wool blanket yarn. The yarn used in our workshop is a waste product from the mills and has been sourced by the tutors from various mills around the UK, and means less waste is going to landfill. 

During the workshop you will learn how to create your own unique Rag Rug. Having learned how to use the tools including a latch hook and cutting gauge, you will then start to create your own rug from 100% pure wool blanket yarn.

This course includes:   

• Your own latch hook
• 1 x 250g ball of blanket yarn
• Hessian mat 90cm x 60cm.

You will leave with the knowledge and skill to finish your rug at home.  There will be additional supplies available to purchase on the day. If you wish to complete your rug in pure wool a further 5 balls at £6 each will be needed, these can be chosen from the vast range of wool and paid for on the day.
 

Your tutors, Alison and Lorraine, live in Cumbria and both are experienced teachers and confess to being ‘rag rug enthusiasts'. While the craft experienced periods of decline, interest in rag rugs has been revived, with many people enjoying the creative and sustainable aspects of making them. You may find Rugging therapeutic and very addictive. So watch out – you may become addicted too!

A lovely and relaxing watercolour workshop for beginners, inspired by dried flowers and their imperfect beauty. This workshop focuses on letting go of perfection and embracing a loose, layered painting style that’s both creatively freeing and wonderfully mindful. It’s the perfect way to relax, explore new painting techniques, and let your creativity blossom.

All materials are provided, along with gentle, supportive guidance throughout the session. You’ll leave not only with your own paintings, but also with the confidence and skills to continue painting at home.

Carla Gebhard is a watercolour artist and illustrator based in the beautiful Forest of Bowland, where she runs a small shop and studio. Carla specialises in artwork for nursery prints, children’s books, and activities, all inspired by animals, nature, and a little bit of whimsy. She also enjoys teaching watercolour workshops for beginners. Her work is always rooted in a love of nature, a sense of calm, and the simple joys in life.
