January Weekend Travel Information

M6 closures:
The M6 between J39 and J40 will be closed due to railway works on:

  • 8pm Fri 2 Jan – 5am Mon 5 Jan
  • 8pm Fri 9 Jan – 5am Mon 12 Jan

Rheged will be open every day including 3 & 4 Jan and 10 &11 Jan.

Getting to Rheged

  • From the A66 (East or West) or travelling South (from the Carlisle direction) via M6 coming off at J40:
    Travel is unchanged.
  • Joining the M6 northbound from J40:
    This remains open.

If travelling north on the M6

  • Exit at J39, take the A6 through Shap, then join the A66 at Kemplay Bank Roundabout (by Tim Hortons) and follow signs to Rheged.

Leaving Rheged to travel South as you can’t join the M6 (J40) South

  1. A66 west to Keswick, then join A591 through the Central Lakes to Kendal, via St Johns in the Vale from Threlkeld or from Keswick.
  2. A66 east to Brough, then A685 to Kirkby Stephen, rejoining the M6 at J38 (Tebay)
    (A6 to Shap closed 5am–8pm)
  3. From 8pm–5am only: you can take A6 from Kemperley Bank roundabout to J39 M6 via Shap.

Travelling from Penrith

  • Use the A5288 past Gillwilly Estate, and take the turn off to Newbiggin rather than following the diversion sign, where you will be able to join the A66 East to Rheged.
  • Ullswater Road (past North Lakes Hotel to the J40 roundabout) and Carlton Avenue from Penrith towards the Kemplay Bank roundabout will be closed.

Traffic advisory:
Peak congestion expected at Kemplay Bank and J40 between 11am–1pm. Please allow extra travel time.
