In A Thousand Words, filmmakers Dom Bush and Matt Sharman travel from the dusty archives of the Alpine Club to Nepal in search of the exact spot from where, in 1899, the first photographic images of Everest were taken. Part travelogue, part mystery and part tribute to mountain photographer Vittorio Sella, the film probes our obsession with Everest and mountain photography, and asks how in a world where AI, digital short cuts and social media rule most of our lives, can we find time to slow down and appreciate the natural world.
The Five Treasures of the Snows tells the story of the 1955 first ascent of Kangchenjunga, the world's third highest mountain, by a team of British climbers and Sherpas. Local filmmakers John Porter and Dom Bush put together the film using original footage shot by the leader Charles Evans and interviews with the legendary Joe Brown. John Porter’s script is narrated by another local film maker Matt Sharman. The film reveals the strong friendship and shared objectives with the Sherpas and explains the expedition's decision to stop just short of the summit in respect the local religious belief, so unlike modern, commercial ascents.
