This entertaining, illustrated talk explores the amazing lives of 12 garden bird species (one for each month of the year) and considers how we can help support and protect them in our gardens. (Disclaimer: No birds were consumed in pies during the making of this talk).

Popular with garden and nature groups, Nic will celebrate the amazing birds we come across in our everyday lives and how we can help them thrive.  The talk will include images of the birds, nests and eggs taken by Nic’s Father Alan Garner who is a licensed BTO bird ringer and nest recorder.

 
Nic Wilson is a writer, editor, Guardian country diarist and author of the nature memoir Land Beneath the Waves, one of BBC Wildlife Magazine's Best Nature Books of 2025. She works for BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine, specialising in wildlife, wild plants and environmental issues and has nearly 30 years’ writing experience spanning academia, education, journalism and narrative non-fiction. 

Nic is passionate about connecting people with local wildlife and landscapes. She volunteers for the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust and helps organise a community nature network group. She leads workshops on gardening, wildlife and nature writing for a range of organisations including the Wildlife Trusts and Cambridge University Botanic Garden.

Nic's writing has appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies including British Wildlife Magazine, Under the Changing Skies: The Best of The Guardian Country Diaries 2018-2024, Going to Ground: An Anthology of Nature and Place, Moving Mountains, described as a ‘first-of-its-kind’ anthology of nature writing by disabled and chronically ill writers, and Women on Nature.
